Our favourite wines to gift this Christmas

Forget-Brimont Brut 1er Cru Champagne NV

A harmonious Champagne, boasting a fine and creamy mousse and lightly mouthwatering acidity throughout, enlivening the bright hints of green apple and lemon that accent the poached pear, toasted brioche and grated ginger flavours.
This mid-weight, floral Champagne will make an excellent aperitif, but it can also stand up to lighter-bodied foods. It is a beautifully balanced wine with plenty of Chardonnay character.

Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris Original Vines 2015

Eyrie pioneered this variety in the New World, and the New World’s oldest vines contribute to this cuvée. They take a slow approach—their Pinot gris ages 3-4 times longer than most commercial versions, on its natural yeast lees and in the company of full malolactic. The result is textural suppleness to complement the acidity, and a surprising ability to age.

In addition, no sulphites have been added to the wine, and Eyrie choose to retain the natural crystals that will form in the bottle when it is chilled. These crystals and the richness of long age help accent the natural expression of the grapes and also contribute to incredible ageing potential.

The wine is light gold in color, with crunchy apple and a touch of Asian spice coming through on the front palate. A rich mid palate balances creamy ripe pear and floral tones, and leads to a lengthy, polished finish. Full-bodied, chewy, it’s a potent wine with an assortment of herb, citrus and tree fruit elements all in a pleasing tangle.

Azelia Barolo 2019

The 2019 Azelia Barolo is a Nebbiolo wine blended from seven different vineyards in the Piedmont region of Italy. It’s a full-bodied, mid-weight wine with a light garnet colour and a bouquet of fruit, liquorice, and blue flower.

On the palate, it has notes of dark cherry, plum, blood orange, exotic spice, cedar, and tobacco. It was Fermented with ambient yeasts and aged for 40 days with submerged cap and aged in large Slavonian oak “botti” for two years, so there is very little oak influence. This is an excellent value Barolo for anytime of the year.

Muhr-Van der Niepoort Sydhang 2016

The grapes for this Syrah grow on the Spitzerberg – more precisely, in the vineyards Ried Roterd & Ried Spitzer, both on the southern slope of the hillside. It is a pure, very dry limestone soil, which retains hardly any of the meagre rainfall. The Syrah, which develops its aroma and varietal typicity late in the autumn, enjoys the dry summer and the long autumn on the Spitzerberg.

This wine is a mix of black olive tapenade, pepper and blueberry with just a whisper of violet that almost with drumrolls announces Syrah. On the palate this is taut, dark and tart. The unfolding floral perfume promises greatness, and there is enough grip and freshness to make it last.

Chêne Bleu Astralabe 2019

In real life, Astralabe was the son of famous medieval lovers Héloïse and Abélard, who gave their names to Chêne Bleu’s twin flagship reds. This cuvée, younger in age and in spirit than its complex collectible “parents,” is a vibrant yet easy-drinking Grenache-Syrah blend. Perfect for everyday cuisine or with fresh Mediterranean fare. Well paired ideally with red or white meat, grilled fish and olive oil-based cuisine. Serve at room temperature or slightly cooler.

Château Petit Védrines Sauternes 2013

Golden in colour, the nose shows caramelised citrus, orange marmalade and honeysuckle. Sweet, but not cloying, there are lovely botrytis flavours intermingled with orange and lime peel and fresh citrus acidity on the generous finish. This is an exotic, beguiling wine that lifts from the glass. It is soft, gentle and very nicely layered, conveying an impression of total elegance and finesse.

Leslie’s Reserve Brut is a traditional method sparkling wine and one which epitomises what makes sparkling English wine so special: elegant purity, a linear focus and fresh acidity. Predominantly Chardonnay, with citrus, green apple and brioche flavours to the fore. The wine’s distinctive aromatic and spicy character is enhanced with the addition of a small percentage of Pinot Gris to the blend, creating a clean profile featuring citrus and green apple notes with an aromatic and spicy edge, and a subtle chalky, smoky finish.

J Lohr Bay Mist White Riesling 2022

Unoaked and just slightly sweet. My goes-with-anything food-friendly white wine is a perfect pairing to fusion cuisines or any dish with a lick of spicy heat. Exotic aromas of honeysuckle, ripe pear, Meyer lemon, and lychee. Flavors of ripe apple and pear, with just a touch of residual sweetness, classic minerality, and a light, refreshing spritz of natural carbonation on the finish.

Mountadam Five-Fifty Shiraz 2020

Soaring at 550 metres above sea level in the Eden Valley, the Mountadam vineyards bask in cool breezes and ample sunshine. This unique terroir is reflected in the Mountadam Vineyards Barossa 550 Shiraz, a wine that balances the power of Barossa Valley Shiraz with the finesse of a high elevation site. On the nose, the Mountadam 550 Shiraz immediately entices with a medley of aromas. Spicy black pepper dances alongside juicy plums and a hint of mulberry. A touch of toasty oak adds complexity and subtle notes of earth and leather.

This Shiraz is a natural companion to grilled or roasted red meats. Its robust character stands up well to the richness of lamb shanks, beef stews, or herb-crusted steaks. Also with hearty vegetarian dishes like portobello mushroom burgers, lentil stews with smoked paprika, or roasted vegetables with goat cheese.
